PEPeNERO (Jakarta and Bali)

PEPeNERO is a chain of Italian restaurants in Bali and Jakarta. They are almost copies of the Trattoria restaurants, so you can read my review about it also.

I visited the PEPeNERO in Menara Karya, during lunchtime, and it was packed with both locals and expats. If you come with a group of people, I think you should always book in advance.

The menu is large, written in Italian and English. Prices for a starter is around Rp50,000++, for main dish around Rp80,000++, and for a pizza around Rp50,000++. 

I went for one of their 40 pizzas, all with thin crust. It tasted great for the price, and so far I haven't found better value pizza in Jakarta (ex-aequo with Trattoria). The service is very fast, professional and friendly.

Overall: Recommended if you are looking for good-value European food in Jakarta. PEPeNERO is not a fine-dining restaurant, but it is adequate for dates, business lunches, celebration, etc.. There is a non smoking area as well.

Bersih Sehat chain (Massage Traditional)

Bersih Sehat is one reliable address to get good value traditional massages in Jakarta. More affordable than some places like Taman Sari Spa, a 2 hour massage will cost you around 200,000 rupiah. Clean facilities and welcoming service. Once again, it is not a sex spa.

How does it work?

After paying, you will go to a large room where they have about 10 other people getting their massage. Don't worry, there are curtains between everyone so you cannot actually see anyone (but you can hear some noise). Then, you take off you clothes and keep only your underwear. You wrap a towel around your waist, and the massage can start. Bersih Sehat massage girls will usually press you quite hard, so if you prefer a soft massage, you should mention it. At the end, you can take a shower. Don't forget to leave a tip since it is the main source of income for your masseuse (Rp50k is good).

Bureau (Gastro Pub Pondok Indah)

Bureau is a bar and restaurant ("gastro-pub") located in Pondok Indah Plaza 2, next to PEPeNERO and De Hooi. In spite of its French name (meaning "office" or "desk"), it serves a mix of continental dishes. You have grilled steaks, ribs, lamb chops, served with french fries or pastas for instance. The only typical French dishes on the menu could be the Duck L'Orange (Rp87k++), the Mussels Marinara (Rp65k++), the snails (Rp35k++), the Foie Gras (Rp135k++) and for desserts, the Crêpes (Rp27k).

It has two floors: The small bar downstairs, perfect for an after-work drink or a meal, and the bigger room upstairs, with a DJ booth an dancefloor space that may be used for bigger parties.

The design is very basic and looks unfinished (maybe similar to Koi in Kemang): Concrete floor, raw material used (steel, wood, stone), no décoration, etc... It is no longer very original in Jakarta unfortunately.

The service is very friendly and fast, and even during the afternoon on a Monday, there were a few clients inside. If you enjoy European beers, they have a few (Gauloise Blonde, Blanche de Namur, Beck, Erdinger, Leffe). Or you can stick to Bintang (Rp35k++).

Overall: A good addition to the nightlife scene in Pondok Indah. I guess that it will target Indonesians more than expats and that they should organize some happening events once in a while. I did not try the food, comments are welcomed.

Delta CD's Club (Pondok Indah)

Delta CD's club opened on January 14th, 2011. It is owned by the Puri Group, famous for its massage parlours (see review Delta Spa).

It is a girly club, quite unique in South Jakarta, and I wonder if it will be a success or not. I haven't had time to visit yet, but I'll try as soon as possible. 

Opened everyday except on Monday. Starting 9pm, they have live music, "wet" sexy dancers and "laser show acrobatic". I think that it must be very similar to some clubs in Kota such as V2 or MnB.

Delta Spa (Different branches in Jakarta)

Delta Spa is probably the most famous men spa in Jakarta and also the best. It is not a sex spa though: You will always get a plus-plus, but nothing more... Another similar chain of men spas in Jakarta is My Place.

The masseuses in Delta Spa are usually experienced and skillful, much more than in many other more expensive massage parlours. Yet, the prices have almost doubled in the past five years, and it is no longer a cheap venue. It will cost you around 600,000rp for a 3 hour massage + the possibility to use the facilities for the whole day (jacuzzi, sauna, swimming pool, fitness equipment). Perfect way to end up a week-end of clubbing on sundays.

There also seems to be a Delta massage for gay people, well at least with a special gay area, the "cemara room". It's a report from someone else on this website (Utopia Asia) so I don't know more about it and I'm not really sure we're talking about the same delta brand...

De Hooi Cafe (Pondok Indah Plaza)

An excellent bar, De Hooi was not in our listing until now only because it is located a bit far from the center, in Pondok Indah, where we seldom venture. In this part of town however, it is easily the most popular and the most happening bar, attracting a good mix of both expats and locals, in an easy going and welcoming atmosphere.

Many regular customer crowd the bar and it seems like most patrons know each other already.. Live music, free-wifi, and a good menu featuring American, Indian, Dutch, Indonesian food (you can take a look at it here: De Hooi menu part 1, part 2, part 3, they do delivery). If you live in Pondok Indah, this is the place where you want to go to have fun.

Its regular events include:
Every sunday from 7am to 3pm, Bloody mary bar = for every breakfast purchase, you get free flow bloody mary.
Every Sunday from 8pm to 9pm, open mic = a free beer for anyone who plays or sings a song.
Monday all day: Happy hour on draft beer.
Tuesday from 7pm to 9pm: Free flow wine.
Wednesday starting 7pm: Quizz Night.
Wednesday from 6pm to 12pm: Chicken wings night (1000rp/piece).
Thursday, from 5pm to the end: Ladies nights (50% off for ladies).

The Duck King (Chinese Restaurant)

I've never been a fan of large restaurant chains, but since more and more restaurants in Jakarta open a new branch as soon as they have a little success, it is hard just ignoring them.

The Duck King, and its premium version "The Grand Duck King", is a medium to upscale restaurant that you will find the more often in malls in Jakarta but also in other Indonesian cities (the one I tried was in Bandung). It is always quite full because the prices are competitive and the service is professional. You can feel all employees have been trained and that their smiles are not as spontaneous as they look. The clients are quite diverse: Expats, Indonesians and also many Chinese. If you visit on Friday/Saturday night, or any other busy day, you may want to book a table in advance because it is always full.



The menu is huge (maybe 100 dishes) and colorful, but I decided to go for the duck. I took half a duck + a mushroom soup + two bottles of mineral water, and paid Rp 215,000 for everything. It wasn't the best duck I ever had (which was in Surabaya), but I must say I was quite happy with the whole meal and also with the dining experience there. It is the kind of place you want to go for lunch with colleagues or in a business setting, but not really for anything more intimate I think, especially not a date.

Garuda Padang Restaurant Jakarta

Padang restaurants are countless in Jakarta, and you may find one in almost every street of the city (for new comers and tourists, Padang is the name of a city in Sumatra). Most of the Padang restaurants are small street food stalls or simple "rumah makan" (basic restaurants), and unfortunately many expats can be reluctant to try this kind of establishment because the hygiene is not up to their standards.

The Garuda food chain is a good way to experience Padang food because their venues are clean and comfortable, while the general atmosphere and the prices remain close from that of the original Padang food concept.

After seating, the waiters will bring you about 15 different dishes, the most common ones, but you can also ask for more specific ones. Then you will be charged only for what you eat. Padang food is quite hot, though it's not, as many people think, the spiciest cuisine of Indonesia. If your stomach is fragile, ask for a lot of rice, ayam goreng bumbu, sayur, and beef rendang... You should be OK.


My food was excellent, nothing to complain about. I ate for 5 people and paid Rp 60,000. If you don't try too many dishes, the average bill will be around Rp 30,000-Rp 50,000 per person including tea.

Kafe Betawi (Jakarta)

Kafé Betawi is a chain of Indonesian food restaurants located in various malls in Jakarta. I tried the one in Plaza Indonesia.

Their concept is to sell typical street food dishes in a clean and cozy atmosphere. The prices are low, especially for malls and they are usually popular venues to eat probably for this reason.

We had a few dishes in Kafe Betawi:

Overall: The food is decent, but certainly not the best Indonesian food you will find in Jakarta. Considering the prices and the friendly service though, I will probably come back the next time I need a simple, good-value meal inside a mall.

Martha Tilaar Spa (Many locations in Jakarta)

Martha Tilaar spa is a popular place to get traditional massages in Jakarta. Excellent service, welcoming staff, nice balinese/javanese setting and not so expensive (though more than average), I recommend it.

I haven't been to Mitra Sehat spa, but from the information I could gather on the internet, it is similar with Bersih Sehat Spa: Good massages are provided without an extra service (no handjob), except maybe if you can negotiate with the girl. Cheap.

Moscatly Roof Garden Lounge (Pondok Indah)

Moscatly is a three-storey dining venue with a restaurant on the first floor, a lounge on the second, and a nice roof-top garden on the third. For the clubber, the main interest will be to check the live performances on Wednesday and Friday. When I was there they had some sort of an old-school RnB singer and it was pretty laid-back. Only problem is the place is far from the center of Jakarta.

Pancious Pancake House

Pancious is a popular chain of restaurants specializing in pancakes and waffles, with also some main course dishes such as pasta, steaks and burgers. They are all located in malls, including the one I tried in Plaza Indonesia.

While the setting is unimpressive and dull, my first positive impression came from the friendly waiters, who welcomed me with smiles and took the time to chat. I ordered a cheese burger (Rp44,000++), a strawberry juice (Rp26,000++), and the regular pancakes (Rp26,000++). I was pleasantly surprised with all my food, which tasted good and was moderately priced (for a mall). The juice was made of real fruits, the pancakes were similar to what I had before in the US, and the ingredients of the burger were all fresh and fair quality.

Overall: I was very satisfied with my experience in Pancious. It's not the place for a romantic dinner, but for a snack or an informal meal with friends, it is perfect.
