Colosseum Club (New 1001, Ex-K7)

Very interesting opening this year with the new Colosseum Club, which used to be part of K7 and is now managed by the same group behind Alexis hotel and Emporium Spa. Colosseum is actually the relocation of the 1001, which closed two years ago and was replaced by Illigals... Still following?

I went to Colosseum a few years ago and it was unfortunately a dying club (see my review here). Too bad because the place is really massive (2,000 persons capacity), one of the biggest in Jakarta and it has a huge potential.

With the new management, we can expect the place to become really popular: The music is now retro and house, with good sound system and spectacular lighting show. Being a part of Alexis group, it goes without saying that they have sexy dancers, fashion shows, and rooms...

Siera or Pujasera Nightclub (Mangga Besar)

Jakarta nightlife still surprises me... The latest unexpected find was Siera which I had heard of before but never had the chance to visit... People also call it Pujasera, but I was unable to understand which name was the proper one...

Siera is located on Jalan Mangga Besar, about 1 kilometer East of Jalan Hayam Wuruk. It is not too difficult to find but you should be attentive not to miss it. It looks like a Roman temple, with a colourful lighting.

You have to pay about Rp20,000 to get in, and for this price you will get a small bottle of water. Inside is really crowded, until morning. The club is like a long corridor, maybe a 100 meters deep, with at least 500 people, maybe a 1000. If you were on the dancefloor at the end of the corridor and suddenly there was a fire, you'll have no chance to escape. It is very likely that 90% of the customers have taken drugs, and I would imagine that all girls in this place are working. As the price and facilities are quite cheap, it attracts a crowd of middle class Indonesian, with few Chinese.

The music is very aggressive and loud, and personally I couldn't stand to stay more than 10 minutes in the club. I took a few pictures, which are unfortunately quite dark, but I have a video that captures well its essence.

Overall: Recommended place for those wishing to explore the undergrounds of Jakarta nightlife. Also good for anybody who wants to experiment the contradictions of the capital of the largest Muslim country on earth.

1001 Night Club (or Seribu Satu Disco or Thousand and One International executive club) (Hayam Wuruk, next to Stadium) CLOSED

Classy, huge "one-stop entertainment nightclub", but not so crowded. It's located just next to Stadium, it is the building you can see from the street with a big red lighting. The music is Techno Kota, except in the lounge where they have prostitutes from all over the globe. That’s why they call it an International Executive Club I guess, because we’ve not seen many foreigner there.

You have everything you need to party here, as long as you pay: Drugs, sexy girls, spa, karaoke, massage center, a "mandarin" singing hall, and maybe more... It is one of the nightclubs depicted in the book "Jakarta Undercover", a famous book about nightlife in Jakarta, probably the one with the "sashimi sex" scenes.

Alexis Hotel (Ancol, Jl. R. E. Martadinata No. 1 North Jakarta)

The Hotel Alexis is not really a hotel, it’s more like a bordello. You’ve got a good club downstairs, The Play, with house/progressive music and sexy dancers, and a very select lounge/spa on the seventh floor, the Bathhouse, with girls from countries as far as Uzbekistan, Myanmar or Russia coming to entertain the patrons. Entrance fee for the Bathhouse lounge is Rp. 120,000, and no drinks included. Also a karaoke on the 5th floor (I forgot the name), very nice, with flat screen TV and audio equipment suitable for outdoor concerts. Goddam expensive though, about Rp 3.5 million for 4 people.

 In the club the Play, they have a sort of live show with naked girls pretending to have sex, but you can only see the shadow... quite interesting... People call it the Aquarium . Alexis has become one of the most famous party place in Jakarta over the past 2-3 years, along with Stadium, Bats, Blowfish and Red Square. Be sure to check the 7th floor...

They have the mythical "Alexis Open Air Parties" that I've never been to, and I don't know if it is a regular event or not. Here is a photo, you can find more on this page Forum Bebas:

Athena Executive Club and Bar (Kota Tua, near the canal)

Surrealistic club in Kota Tua, Jakarta's old town, on the border of the canal. Loud Music, very dark and apart from the waiters and the usual working girls, no customers. They probably have a karaoke and a spa, or some sort of massage parlour, because that's the way people party in Kota.

BATS (Hotel Shangri-La)

An all-time favourite of Jakarta's nightlife. Very, very popular bar among expatriates, especially those who are already married. Easy to know why, considering the number of pretty, sexy girls. But the place isn't just about finding a partner. You can have a lot of fun partying there, because you will easily meet people in a relaxed atmostsphere.

BATS has a live band, imported from Quebec the more often and playing Top 40 songs. A bit annoying because it's hard to talk and hard to find a place to seat though, but at least you will be pushed in the crowd and on the dancefloor. The entrance fee is quite expensive, around Rp. 100,000, but they will serve you a very large beer. Good to go on Sunday or Monday because it is one of the few places still crowded. Very tasty steaks at the restaurant.

New Blue Print Karaoke, Spa, Bar, Lounge and Nightlife (Jakarta, Twin Plaza Hotel, Jalan S. Parman)

Club located on top of Twin Plaza, near Taman Anggrek. Nice view, nice sofa but a bit old. Doesn't seem to attract many customers apart from the Hotel client and a few working girls. It has some sort of private karaoke or spa or massage place, so I wonder if it's a real hotel or if it's only a massage parlour disguising itself as a hotel in order to avoid closing during Ramadan.

Update July 2010: The management of the spa has changed. It's now operated by Rizz Spa, from 10am to 10pm. Price is 325k rp.

Cantik Jakarta Executive Bar and Karaoke (Jalan Melawai 7, Blok M)

I discovered this address thanks to the free magazine that KLM gives his passenger. I'm a bit surprised they recommended that bar since it's a prostitution place... Lots of girls there... The Karaoke seems to be brand new and quite luxurious!

You can check out the website of the karaoke: http://www.cantik-jakarta.com/ They have some photos. They say they have sexy dancers, rooms, and 100 "companions". That's clearly another brothel in Jakarta. Please don't send us email asking us details because we just report, but don't make a use of those places..

I think the place is connected to a lounge called Goen Lounge and Bar, (website is here) which would be similar in its entertainment purpose. I don't know if it's the same building or not... anybody who can comment is very welcome!

Club 36 - Gogo dancers & Strip club (Hotel Jayakarta)

Club 36, the bar of the Jayakarta hotel is a small club, with house music and RnB, one of the most popular and the best in its type in Kota. It has gogo dancers that go topless (Thai and Chinese) and they go completely naked occasionally. Club 36 is very crowded with the Chinese community. It's a good place to go even during the week because you will never be alone there. You can do karaoke also (36 rooms) with one of the dancers or other "companions". Pretty cool place, and it's open late as well (5AM) so it's nice to stop by when coming from South Jakarta, before starting hardcore Kota clubbing!

CJ's Bar and Club (Hotel Mulia Senayan, Jalan Asia-Afrika)

Hotel bar, with mostly expats, prostitutes and business travelers. No entrance fee but you have to buy a first drink, more than Rp100,000 usually (large beer is Rp130,000). The bar underwent renovation, and became a bit more classy than it used too. Kind of Red Square-esque, but "normal girls" don't really go there as they do in Red Square. There is always a good band playing top 40 songs, with a DJs taking its turn during the breaks. I like to go there regardless of the bar girls scene because there's always quite a crowd and it's very lively, even during the week.

Update March 2011: I've been there twice this week and it was packed both times, with expats from all over the world (mainly Asian). There are lots of girls in CJs, but only a few are really pretty. The band was very fun, making the night very entertaining. The only problem would be the cost of the hangover since most drinks will cost you way over $15. As I said in my first review, I recommend you to try it on week nights, when all the other bars are quiet (Check also BATS).

Classic Club Karaoke & Massage Parlour (or Bunker) (Classic Hotel, Jl. K.H. Samanhudi 43-45, Pasar Baru Jakarta)

I went to Classic Club after hearing of a club named "the Bunker"... enough to arouse my curiosity. It took me two months of investigations to find it. The bar is in Classic Hotel and it is actually called Classic Club. It is a one-stop entertainement nightclub with spa/karaoke/massage, a bit like Malioboro, with lots of girls from Uzbekistan also. 100% prostitutes. The patrons are mostly indonesians (no european/american expats but a few Indian and arab) in their 30s or 40s, so the music is not the hippest you will hear in Jakarta.

On the second floor, there is a room called Terminal Classic, where you can see full nude sexy dancers, and lots of them. Famous because you can ask for a threesome.

De Leila - Arabic Bar and Belly Dancing (Gatot Subroto)

De Leila is a popular bar with dangdut and arab music. I learnt that it is owned by the guy behind Tanamur and JJs, 2 famous discos in Soeharto's era Jakarta nightlife. It's kind of like an hotel bar but with arab expats mostly, so it is a tiny bit different: You'll see girls are a usually less skinny than regular indonesian girls, and apparently, somebody left a comment saying it's the place in Jakarta to go where girls do anal sex... Think global, act local?

They have middle-eastern food and shisha and a good atmosphere in general. It is not very famous in the non-arab expat community but you should try it, it's worth at least a visit.

Comment from SZ: "Arab bar. Many waiters getting bored, arabic pop music with prostitutes, yet nice girls, and rich middle-easterners dancing. Billard and Le Tour de France on TV. Surprising".

Delta CD's Club (Pondok Indah)

Delta CD's club opened on January 14th, 2011. It is owned by the Puri Group, famous for its massage parlours (see review Delta Spa).

It is a girly club, quite unique in South Jakarta, and I wonder if it will be a success or not. I haven't had time to visit yet, but I'll try as soon as possible. 

Opened everyday except on Monday. Starting 9pm, they have live music, "wet" sexy dancers and "laser show acrobatic". I think that it must be very similar to some clubs in Kota such as V2 or MnB.
