It is a karaoke that will interest men especially, with a large choice of "lady companion". The ladies will cheer you up and encourage you to sing and drink... nothing more....

The prices depends on the number room you choose, from 300,000rp to 900.000rp per room, not including the drinks.

Ali Baba Steak & Iga Bakar

Self-proclaimed "the best value steak in Jakarta", Ali Baba is indeed a cheap, but clean restaurant. At the time of my visit, the prices were Rp38,000 for a New-Zealand tenderloin, and Rp75,000 for Australian tenderloin. It should be noted that the NZ steak tasted pretty much the same as a local one. If you want to eat something decent for western standards, you have to choose the Australian beef.

Ali Baba is all new, with some vintage decoration. It doesn't look high class, but it is far better than competitor Abuba Steak in terms of design. Regarding taste, if you choose the imported meat, I think it also tastes similar. But for those who know it, I would rate Suis Butcher in Bandung a bit higher.

Overall: Recommended for lunch or any informal meal, especially if you live/work near Sarinah Mall.

Angke (Chinese Jakarta Resto)

Angke is a very famous Chinese "Hakka" restaurant with two locations in Jakarta, in Ketapang and Kelapa Gading. I only tried the latter, which is made of one huge dining room half the size of a football field. I guess it is adequate for weddings and receptions, but I don't recommend it if you want to have an intimate dinner.

I sat on my table, surrounded by children playing and screaming, and ordered 1/2 Grilled Duck (Rp95,000) and Kailan Cah (Rp30,000). I had read many excellent reviews about this place, but when comparing with Liyen, my favourite Chinese restaurant in Jakarta, the taste of my food in Angke was much less flavorful, while costing the same. It was decent, but certainly not worth all the buzz.

Overall: From my small experience, I would not recommend Angke because I didn't enjoy its ceremonious atmosphere and I didn't think their food was special enough to justify a long trip to this part of Jakarta.

For Chinese food lovers though, and if you live near Kelapa Gading, I'm sure there are some great dishes on their long, extensive menu. You could try the following, praised on other Jakarta food blogs: Ayam Garam, Hai Som, Lindung Ca Fumak, Sapi Cah Kail Lan, Fuyunghai Babi. The cost for 1 person for a 2-course meal with soft drinks should be around Rp120,000.

The Barrels (Summarecon Mall Serpong)

The Barrels is one of the few decent beer-drinking joints you will find in Serpong/Tangerang. It is inside Summarecon Mal, on the downtown walk, and it basic but lively. You have a big poster of a cave with barrels on the walls, some high tables and chairs in lign, and the barrels... For a little above Rp250k, you can order a small barrel of Bintang to share with your friends.

They also have local live music bands on weekends.

Bersih Sehat chain (Massage Traditional)

Bersih Sehat is one reliable address to get good value traditional massages in Jakarta. More affordable than some places like Taman Sari Spa, a 2 hour massage will cost you around 200,000 rupiah. Clean facilities and welcoming service. Once again, it is not a sex spa.

How does it work?

After paying, you will go to a large room where they have about 10 other people getting their massage. Don't worry, there are curtains between everyone so you cannot actually see anyone (but you can hear some noise). Then, you take off you clothes and keep only your underwear. You wrap a towel around your waist, and the massage can start. Bersih Sehat massage girls will usually press you quite hard, so if you prefer a soft massage, you should mention it. At the end, you can take a shower. Don't forget to leave a tip since it is the main source of income for your masseuse (Rp50k is good).

Chasio Garing ACC (Chinese Restaurant)

I came all the way from Sudirman to Jalan Pangeran Jayakarta, in Glodok, because I was told this street had some of the best Chinese street food stalls and warungs in Jakarta.

When I arrived, it was already late but some venues were still crowded. I chose one of them, Chasio Garing Acc, for a simple reason: They had air-conditioning. It turned out their unit was not functioning very well, so I had a chance to sweat a little, and also to get a few mosquito bites.

There isn't much to say about the inside as it looks like any typical warung: 4 walls with kitschy ornaments and posters, basic chairs and tables, and uncertain hygiene.

I had eaten the best Grilled Duck ever a week earlier in Liyen, and the one in Chasio Garing Acc was quite disappointing. Since it is twice as cheap in the latter, there wasn't much to expect anyway. I also tried the Beef Kwetiaw: The ingredients were not very fresh and the meat low quality. I only had a few bites and couldn't finish.

Overall: I was hoping I would find a gem in Jalan Pangeran, and it didn't happen. Chasio Garing Acc is fine if you love Chinese food and live 50 meters from the restaurant. If not, I don't think it is worth it.

Delta Spa (Different branches in Jakarta)

Delta Spa is probably the most famous men spa in Jakarta and also the best. It is not a sex spa though: You will always get a plus-plus, but nothing more... Another similar chain of men spas in Jakarta is My Place.

The masseuses in Delta Spa are usually experienced and skillful, much more than in many other more expensive massage parlours. Yet, the prices have almost doubled in the past five years, and it is no longer a cheap venue. It will cost you around 600,000rp for a 3 hour massage + the possibility to use the facilities for the whole day (jacuzzi, sauna, swimming pool, fitness equipment). Perfect way to end up a week-end of clubbing on sundays.

There also seems to be a Delta massage for gay people, well at least with a special gay area, the "cemara room". It's a report from someone else on this website (Utopia Asia) so I don't know more about it and I'm not really sure we're talking about the same delta brand...

The Duck King (Chinese Restaurant)

I've never been a fan of large restaurant chains, but since more and more restaurants in Jakarta open a new branch as soon as they have a little success, it is hard just ignoring them.

The Duck King, and its premium version "The Grand Duck King", is a medium to upscale restaurant that you will find the more often in malls in Jakarta but also in other Indonesian cities (the one I tried was in Bandung). It is always quite full because the prices are competitive and the service is professional. You can feel all employees have been trained and that their smiles are not as spontaneous as they look. The clients are quite diverse: Expats, Indonesians and also many Chinese. If you visit on Friday/Saturday night, or any other busy day, you may want to book a table in advance because it is always full.



The menu is huge (maybe 100 dishes) and colorful, but I decided to go for the duck. I took half a duck + a mushroom soup + two bottles of mineral water, and paid Rp 215,000 for everything. It wasn't the best duck I ever had (which was in Surabaya), but I must say I was quite happy with the whole meal and also with the dining experience there. It is the kind of place you want to go for lunch with colleagues or in a business setting, but not really for anything more intimate I think, especially not a date.

Energy Massage Jakarta

Energy Massage is a new spa in Jakarta providing quality non-erotic massages for men and women. A member of the Massage Association of Indonesia (IKNI - Ikatan Naturopatis Indonesia), I recommend it to you only if you live nearby. It is definitely not worth the ride to Kelapa Gading for those staying in South or Central Jakarta since you have tons of massage options there (see my two guides about the best massages in Jakarta: The Best Traditional Massages in Jakarta and The 10 best spas & massage parlour in Jakarta).

Since Energy Massage is still new, it is really clean and quite cheap. And If I believe the few expats friends I know in Kelapa Gading, most massage parlours there are rather seedy and gloomy, so I reckon it is a good address to know. Also, you can also choose your massage to be provided by a male or a girl. Open every day from 10 am to 10 pm.

Gahyo (Korean Barbeque)

Gahyo is among the best Korean restaurants in Jakarta, with two locations, in Sudirman (SCBD) and in Kelapa Gading. I only tried the first one, which I heard had a better reputation than the second. I arrived in the late afternoon and the restaurant was still empty. But by the time I left, it was starting to fill up with mostly Korean clients. On weekends, I would advise you to book in advance.

The decoration is rather basic, but it feels authentic. You have different sitting areas: Normal tables, tatami or private areas. Each table has its own ventilation system to avoid cooking smells.

Gahyo specializes in Korean barbeque, with some recommended specialties, among which the Teuk Yangyeum Galbi (Marinated boneless beef prime rib, Rp198,000++), that a famous expat magazine once voted  the best dish in Jakarta.

I ordered Grilled Ox Tripe (Teuk Yang Gui, Rp155,000++) and Seolrungtang, a soup with beef and noodles. I was unhappy with that dish because I had asked for something with plenty of fresh vegetables, and I got the exact contrary. When I inquired about desserts later on, the waiter obviously didn't understand what I said but instead of trying to hear me, he nodded and left. This gave me the impression the service was a bit unprofessional.

Teuk Yang Gui (Rp155,000++)

When you order meat in Gahyo, it is always grilled in front of you. The Ox Tripe was delicious, but the portion too small for its price. You have to take another dish at least if you want to be full. The Seolrungtang was a boring dish, without any flavours and I don't recommend it.

Overall: I was disappointed with Gahyo, especially after being told it was the best Korean restaurant in Jakarta. To be fair though, I don't think I've enjoyed a sample of their food large enough. For this reason, it is probably best visiting it with a group of friends and share a few dishes.

Garuda Padang Restaurant Jakarta

Padang restaurants are countless in Jakarta, and you may find one in almost every street of the city (for new comers and tourists, Padang is the name of a city in Sumatra). Most of the Padang restaurants are small street food stalls or simple "rumah makan" (basic restaurants), and unfortunately many expats can be reluctant to try this kind of establishment because the hygiene is not up to their standards.

The Garuda food chain is a good way to experience Padang food because their venues are clean and comfortable, while the general atmosphere and the prices remain close from that of the original Padang food concept.

After seating, the waiters will bring you about 15 different dishes, the most common ones, but you can also ask for more specific ones. Then you will be charged only for what you eat. Padang food is quite hot, though it's not, as many people think, the spiciest cuisine of Indonesia. If your stomach is fragile, ask for a lot of rice, ayam goreng bumbu, sayur, and beef rendang... You should be OK.


My food was excellent, nothing to complain about. I ate for 5 people and paid Rp 60,000. If you don't try too many dishes, the average bill will be around Rp 30,000-Rp 50,000 per person including tea.

Harmiones Barrack café (Kelapa Gading)

A bar/restaurant, Harmonies Barrack is more popular for its discounted prices on beer than its food (Rp25k for draught Carlsberg). Not very pretty but easygoing atmosphere, especially among the shisha smokers. Mostly young, local crowd.

I think the Barrack is for Barrack Obama but I'm not 100% sure... Another similar beer drinking joint in La Piazza is The Barrels.

Jun Njan Chinese Seafood Restaurant

Jun Njan (meaning "Always remember your roots") is a chain of traditional Chinese seafood restaurants with branches all over Jakarta. The one I tried is located in Grand Indonesia, and I don't know if the quality of the food in this restaurant is the same than that in other places.

The menu list is extensive with a mix of various chinese dishes, with a focus on seafood. I thought the cost of the food was fair, given that the restaurant is located in one of Jakarta's most luxurious malls. Jun Njan was not very crowded when I was there, but it is rare: It is usually very busy and sometimes noisy. Not a good set for a quiet or romantic dinner...
