Café Gitane Kemang (Jalan Benda Raya)

Café Gitane is a small and intimate French Restaurant in the south Kemang area, located on Jalan Benda Raya. The place is owned and managed by French people who are cooking and serving your dishes. Inside the restaurant, everything will remind you that you are in a French restaurant, from the Gitane logo ( French brand of cigarettes) to the posters of Pastis or the nice bar counter.

I went there 2 times and it was always full (good thing when to have a small restaurant!). The food was good and the service was pleasant. Try the crème caramel for dessert, you won't be disappointed !

Overall: Café Gitane is good if you want spend time in a cozy and intimate place while having simple good French food.

Spanky's Ribs and Martinis (American Restaurant in Kemang)

I went to Spanky's Ribs & Martinis in the Kemang area. This is a pretty recent Restaurant, opened in early 2013, proposing Western food (mostly American) and elaborated cocktails.

This American Restaurant is located on Jalan Kemang Raya, in the busy Kemang area, and offers a wide variety of Meat ( pork and beef, BBQ style), sandwiches and healthy dishes. I tried the specials of the house "the baby back pork ribs" which was very tender and cooked on a grill, which is great for BBQ ribs. The salad on the side was too light for a 185 000 Rp dish though. Globally, high quality ingredients are used in the kitchen, as for the Chocolate Truffle Cake, a real delight !

The food Menu is quite elaborated, for Jakarta's standards and food can be delivered to your home through the website Foodpanda.

I loved the decoration, full of American black and white pictures and wooden objects. The bar is also impressive along with the cocktail menu.

    Moe's Place Restaurant (Kemang)

Moe's Place is an American-style grill joint located in Kemang and opened on September 2011.

We went there on a saturday evening and found the place busy but not full. Clientele was mixed, partly expats and partly Indonesians, mostly families. There is a terrace outside to sit and dine which faces the parking lot and the street and there is also an upstairs room which we did not check-out. Downstairs inside offers enough room for approx. 40 diners.

The atmosphere was relaxed, a tad on the noisy side but still ok, and the staff was friendly and very attentive; there was also a manager of sorts around who kept an eye on everything.

The menu of Moe's place is fortunately quite small; a fact I came to appreciate in restaurants. They specialize in ribs, both pork and beef, hamburgers, steaks and pasta.
We ordered the following: one big garden salad (85.000), one full serving of baby-back-pork ribs (230.000) , one serving of beef ribs (180.000), both meat dishes  with coleslaw on the side. Drinkwise we had two Bintang (25.000 each), one Heineken (29.000) and a small bottle of water.
The good thing was definitely the pork ribs, which were nicely cooked and seasoned and the meat actually fell from the bone. The portion was – sizewise – generous, even for my carnivorous husband.

Unfortunately this is where the good things end: My beef ribs were almost ridiculous; sizewise as well as qualitywise. Those ribs were not what you usually get or would expect whe you order beef ribs. No rib bone with a chunk of soft meat around it (as in the pork ribs or even iga sapi), but slices cut transverse to the bone.  Those slices were very thin, certainly less than a centimeter and very dry and chewy and not even remotely  what I had expected (and what I have been served before numerous times in other places).  I’d say the fraction of this complete dish being actually meat was like 60-80 grams max!

The Marinade, by the way, was the exact same than the one they used for the pork. Big disappointment from Moe's Place!

The coleslaw was anything but tasty. What is supposed to be a very creamy yet crunchy, sweet and sour and slightly tangy affair  was in fact just a handfull of threads of dry raw shredded and absolutely bland cabbage with no carrots and no dressing whatsoever.  I love coleslaw, so this was: Big disappointment number 2!

The fries, which I had ordered as a side dish were ok but the portion was again very tiny (exactly 11 sticks!). So, two slices oft thin, dry and chewy meat, 11 sticks of fries and a spoonfull of raw cabbage set me back  IRD 180.000,- This is almost 15 Euros. Definitely not worth it.

The garden salad we shared as a starter was somehow ambitious (some croutons, some slices of cheese on top) but it also disappointed - apart from looking very tired - with blandness and a serious lack of taste and/or dressing (except for very few spots of something very sweet). So, definitely no salad people here. And sadly no one around to be asked how a coleslaw or a salad dressing is supposed to taste or to be prepared. Shame! Another downside was the fact that the place  (inside) was infested with mosquitoes and we were hardly able to eat undisturbed; other patrons even sported one of those battery-driven fly flaps in an effort to keep their kids mosquitoe-free.

When the bill came there was one item on it which we did neither order nor eat. No big deal,  it was removed right away. Overall we paid slightly less than IDR 700.000 (almost 60 Euros) for one good and one bad meal, a very ordinary salad, three beers, and legions of mosquitoes. Given the qualitiy of the better part of the food we consider this heavily overpriced.

    Overall:
Would we go back to Moe's Place? Dunno. If nearby, the husband might go back fort he pork-ribs only, which he liked, or try the hamburgers, which looked good from afar, but considering the overall experience (and my empty stomach even after dinner) it is not very likely.

    Opening Hours:

From 11am to midnight on weekends

    Bobby D's (Kemang)

I haven't been to Bobby D yet, but it was recommended by a reader of Jakarta100bars. His comment was:

"Hi Thibaud, I'm in bobby D's now and haven't found a review for it on your site. It's a nice layout, apparently the guy that owns it is Australian. Had some food here which was quite nice.

The staff are quite friendly here too. They have a pool table as well...check it out :)
    "

I checked their facebook (where I took the photos) and it looks like a simple place with quite many events of all kind: Salsa, Sports, Sexy Night, Cuban, live music...  The prices seem reasonable too... Probably a good restaurant and bar to socialize in Kemang...

    Alcoholics Bar & Grill (Kemang)

Alcoholics Bar & Grill opened at the end of April 2012 next to KOI Kemang. The originality with the place is that everything sold on the menu has been cooked using Alcohol. Personally, I think the concept could be effective, but the name of the restaurant is too ambiguous and misleading. We will see how it goes, but I'm afraid it will not attract the right customers...

    Tree House (Kemang)

Tree House café is an "alternative" hang-out venue in Kemang. It is the kind of bar you are usually more likely to find in Europe than in Indonesia. As such, it isn't surprising that the two young owners, Anton Massoni and Francois Heirbaut, are respectively mixed Indonesian-Italian and mixed Indonesian-Belgian.

Tree House is small and deliberately messy, but it probably helps the guests feel more comfortable. On the walls, you have paintings from local artists and it is expected that new exhibitions will take place regularly. There isn't a fixed live music schedule yet, so be sure to check their facebook/twitter for updates.

It is still new but I predict it will become a very popular spot. Tree House is trendy and it is in the mood of our times: eco-friendly, artsy and original. It is similar with 365, one of the best bars in Kemang.
Food and drink: The menu features Italian dishes (pasta) and snacks, as well as a selection of cocktails.

Opening hours: Open everyday (except on Monday): From 4pm to midnight (3am on weekends).

    365 Eco Bar (Kemang)

365 prides itself in having the best selection of booze, in Kemang. It also has some excellent DJs and some interesting events, in particular the newly introduced dub-step nights on Thursday that are worth checking out. It's very difficult to exist in Kemang's overcrowded nightlife and 365 just managed to do that by daring to be a little more original than most of the other places. This is the reason why I put it among my favourite Kemang clubs.

Update April 2011: I just revisited 365 and again, I loved it. Very friendly staff, excellent music and a beautiful, young crowd. One of the best bars in Jakarta.

999 (Triple 9) Club (Kemang Arcade)

One of the latest addition to Kemang's nightlife. I think that since I've been living in Jakarta, the club which is now called Triple 9 has changed names at least three times. Just before that, it was called Dizzy Lounge.

Apart from the changes of name, it is the same as before: a basic, large dancefloor with a lively party atmosphere, a bar in the center, electro music, DJ & VJ, many high school and college students (a lot more guys than girls), and prices that are not too bad.

One of the best night clubs in Kemang (I also like Nu China). There is a 50,000rp entrance fee (on weekends at least) with free drink included. Lots of special events: Check their facebook fanpage Triple Nine Kemang or their twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/Triplenine999. To keep up with the competition, they also bring some sexy dancers on occasion.

    Amigos Restaurant (Tex-Mex)

Established in Indonesia since 1979, Amigos is a popular family restaurant, the first with Mexican food in Jakarta (now there is also Hacienda). It has two main targets, American expats who miss their tacos, and Indonesian middle class families eager to discover another continent's cuisine. Actually, we are seeing a lot more of these lately as expats are being spoiled with much better places to eat...

The food is junk food, but the atmosphere is friendly. If you want to eat quietly, don't go in the evening because they have live music which can be quite loud. Happy hour from 4pm to 7pm (50% off soft drinks, juices and beer).

Amor Club Kemang (South Jakarta, Jl. Kemang Raya No.67)

Electro bar next to its older sister Café Amor (open 24h). Prices are quite high, with drinks starting Rp60,000, but I think that generally speaking, Kemang has become expensive everywhere in the past 3-4 years. The sound system is good and there is a dark, clubbing atmosphere inside.

The crowd is probably slightly older than in most Kemang clubs. You can get info about events in this place on their facebook fan page by clicking here or try their website Amor Group Website. The proximity with Cafe Amor and Vino Embassy makes it a good place to crash at the end of your night of partying.

    Anatolia Turkish Restaurant Kemang

Update August 2011: Since the Chef in Anatolia has opened its own restaurant, Turkuaz, I've heard the food is not as good as before here. I'll try to confirm as soon as possible. You're welcome to comment.

Anatolia restaurant is one of the only venues in Jakarta where you will find excellent authentic Turkish cuisine. Opened in 1999, it has gained a very good reputation among Jakarta expats and locals for maintaining high standards without being (too) expensive (Rp. 150k to 200k for a three-course meal). Specialty dishes include: Hummus, Ekmegi, Turkish coffee and Sebzeli Dolma, with all ingredients coming from organic vegetables from Kem Farms. Alcohol is served too.

The decor is completely traditional, with Persian carpet on the floor and some artefacts on the walls like porcelain and blow glass pipes. Everything is discreet but feels really authentic: You never think you are in a caricature of a Turkish restaurant.

You have belly dancing shows every night Friday and Saturday. The dancer seemed to be an Indonesian girl, but since I don't know how Turkish girls look like I cannot tell you more... You can also finish your night by smoking shisha.
    Opening hours:
Every day from 11h30am to 10pm (11pm on weekends).

Awards: It has been awarded many times the title of best restaurant in Jakarta, in particular by Tatler Indonesia. Currently, the chef is Turkish, Mr. Sezai Zorlu.

    Attics Lounge and Bar (Kemang)

The Attics is a lounge/bar, opened in March 2011 to replace Second Floor (which relocated elsewhere). It has the same owner than Nu China.

It is intimate, with less than 10 sofas and a small dancefloor, with mostly commercial house music. The volume is loud, with the bass making the whole place shake: It is more a club than a lounge. It wasn't too crowded when I visited (on a Tuesday night), but I can imagine it must be full on weekends. Customers were Indonesians in their twenties. Since the bar area is small, make sure you get a table or you will have to stand up with your drink.

Overall: The Attics is OK when it comes to atmosphere, lighting, sound system, service, but it is too bad they are playing the same songs we hear over and over in Jakarta. I could come back, with a group of friends. Not a place to try if you are alone. Prices rather expensive for Kemang: Rp30k++ for draught Bali Hai, Rp100k++ for a cocktail (Attics Attack).

    Barcode (Kemang)

Barcode Codefin is a big "luxury" club in Kemang, mixing a decent outdoor foodcourt with a club. Im not really a fan of the night clubs in Kemang since the crowd is usually a bit too young and too polite for my likings, plus I find the music to be very similar from clubs to clubs. However, even though Barcode is not that different, it is trying, with a promise to play non commercial music and some interesting special events such as the live acoustic sessions on Fridays or the costume parties Uber, which shouldn't be missed.
