Epilogue (French/Indonesian Restaurant)

Epilogue is a French/Indonesian restaurant opened in mid-2011 by Sandra Djohan, who used to be the head chef of Coquelicot. Since then, she spent some time in Paris to train in the culinary school Le Cordon Bleu, and that's when she came up with the idea for this new venue.

Epilogue has many of the features I like when rating a restaurant: It is owned by its chef, it is in an individual house and it is not part of a chain nor part of a hotel. There aren't many places like that in Jakarta unfortunately.

The design of Epilogue is quite original as it blends traditional javanese architecture with a French touch (through posters and photographs on the wall). It is not very big, with less than 50 seats available in one single room. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy, perfect for a romantic dinner.

The menu features a mix of French (Snails at Rp45k++, Foie Gras at Rp220k++, Fondue for Rp300k++), Indonesian and Italian dishes (pizzas around Rp55k++). I chose the Duck Confit with Balinese Matah sauce, Turmeric long beans and Fragrant rice (Rp95k++).

It turned out my dish was very Indonesian, so maybe not the best choice as I wanted to review Epilogue's French food… Anyway, I was very pleased with it because my Duck was a simple, and yet well-mastered dish in which everything was cooked perfectly. Some would be disappointed by the lack of creativity, but sometimes it is preferable to have a Chef who knows what he/she can do and stick to it.

I also had a Vanilla Crême Caramel (Rp30k++) which tasted average because its texture was too thick, not light enough for a dessert.

Overall: Epilogue is still new but it is promising and I'm curious to know how it will evolve in the following months. I will definitely come back to sample more food and if necessary, I will change my review accordingly.

I recommend it if you leave in South Jakarta. Otherwise, it is quite a long ride and it may be difficult to find since the houses numbers are not on the correct order on Jalan Cipete (don't ask me why!). To find it, you can ask someone for the rumah makan "Bu Endang" and Epilogue is just in front.

Price for a meal with soft drinks: Between Rp150,000 and Rp300,000 for one person (a bit more if you order from the grill).
Opening hours:
From Monday to Thursday: 10am to 11pm
From Friday to Saturday: 10am to 12am
Sunday: 10am to 10pm
